Short History

Cassava is a food crop in the form of clump that is sometimes called Tapioca. Tapioca is a starch found in the roots (tubers) of the plant. Different parts of the plant such as the root, leaves, and sometimes the whole plant, are used in herbal remedies.
Cassava trees originated from the American continent, precisely from the state of Brazil. It disseminated almost to the whole world, among others: Africa, Madagascar, India, and China. Cultivation of Cassava tree has spread to nations which are famous for their agricultural industry and has entered Indonesia in the year 1852.

Opportunities for the development of the cassava business are wide open, because the requirement of product and the immeasurable numbers of end product obtained from cassava are huge, such as Tapioca, Chips, Pellet, Flour, with local market needs from food & beverage (Crisply, Syrup), textile, construction materials (Gypsum & Ceramic), Paper, and livestock industry. Whereas for the export market are required by the European countries, Japan, Korea, China, United States, Germany, to be use as raw materials for pharmaceutical products, industrial raw material of glue, paper, feed mill and construction.

 

Potentials of Cassava Plant

UNIDO (UN Industrial Development Organization) or The Industrial Development Board of The United Nation, have since early 1980 published some reports concerning potentials of cassava or manioc, especially in developing countries such as in Indonesia that possessed huge infrastructure for plantation activities. The report was made due to increasing demand during that period for cassava products in the form of dried cassava, cassava flour, and especially tapioca.


Out of total world product 122,134,000 Tons per year, Indonesia was noted as the third largest producer of manioc (13,300,000 Tons)
